Profit vs. people? Time to change the paradigm

26 Saturday Apr 2014

The story so far: Universal Stranger has just crawled out of the digital womb and is deep into the adolescent stage of defining its identity, meaning and purpose. Two core values are creativity and community (see About) and part of our vision is to use our creativity to serve our local and online communities – becoming, in the process, a force for good (or, failing that, an influence for the better). Pipe dream? Of course; otherwise, why bother?

We’re not alone. Many people have similar aspirations; increasingly, so do a number of high-potential businesses making their impact felt through social media. Los Angeles-based A Hundred Years is one. We liked this story from Forbes magazine and hope you do, too: The Creative Force Behind The World’s Most Important Causes. (And yes, we know Saturday’s a bad day to post a business story but we’ll sort ourselves out eventually.)

“…not of an age, but for all time!”

That’s how Ben Johnson described his friend William Shakespeare, whose 450th anniversary falls tomorrow. We’ve done our bit to mark the occasion by composing a setting for the Bard’s famous Sonnet 18 and creating a video – which you can see here – of Matthew Henrick and The Cove Quartet performing it. Below, photographer Michele Mossop captures the spirit of the project with a combined image of Matthew and the famous engraving of Shakespeare by Martin Droeshout, which appeared in the First Folio edition of Shakespeare’s plays, published in 1623.

Our music video featuring Matthew Henrick singing Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 – in celebration of the Bard’s 450th anniversary next week – is covered on page 11 of the latest edition of local paper, The Bush Telegraph Weekly. Thanks, guys: we’re proud to be part of this great little community. Click here to read the piece; video is below.

Youth unemployment predicted to skyrocket in Far North Queensland

≈ Comments Off on Youth unemployment predicted to skyrocket in Far North Queensland

This is crazy. According to the ABC Far North Queensland website, a new report has found that youth unemployment of between 20 and 40 per cent could become common in parts of Australia by 2016.

Executive director of The Brotherhood of St Laurence, Tony Nicholson, said far north Queensland and some suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney were areas of real concern. “If nothing changes over the next two years and nothing is done about it, youth unemployment rates of between 20 and 40 per cent will become quite commonplace.”

Not that it makes any difference, but yours truly wrote a song about youth unemployment a while back and recorded it with bad boy of the fundraiser circuit, Steve Banks. If only we could change the world one song at a time. Here it is: DSS Blues by Hogan and Banks….

…us music folks, we respond to Darwinian natural selection in the same way as any other species. We evolve.

Excellent post by Gem McCormack of Sydney music media firm Digital Wagon on how musicians should respond to the challenges of streaming and other disruptive technological changes.
